New Children's Books Strike a High Note

As another school year begins, parents are thinking about what they want their children to learn. Exceptional new books about the basics -- language, ecology, and a Christian world view -- offer enticing educational opportunities.

A very clever biblical approach to learning the alphabet is found in My Mini ABC's, actually 24 little books in one giant folder. Each tiny board book contains six pages with biblical words and simple pictures of the letter featured in that book.

Another new alphabet book features biblical characters. In Bible ABC, author Eric Metaxas and illustrator Jim Harris take a character for each letter of the alphabet and give them a passage of rhyming text and an imaginative illustration. Children will enjoy this one long after they've mastered their ABCs.

The "Questions Children Ask" series now includes its sixth title, 106 Questions Children Ask about Our World. It's a comprehensive compendium of questions that children ask as they become aware of the world beyond their home, e.g., "What does cloning mean?" "Is God happy for one country and sad for another at the end of a war?" The real payoff in this book is straightforward answers with key biblical verses and cartoons for each question.

Jonah's Trash . . . God's Treasure is unique. Subtitled "Mr. Grungy's Junkyard Story," each spread has a portion of the Jonah story and directions for a "Trash & Treasure Hunt" in the intriguing collage illustrations of real throw-away items by Joel Anderson (also the author) and Abe Goolsby. Don't miss this one.
