He has shed nearly 100 pounds (now he sheds his coat as well since he doesn't need to cover up so much). He has fought this giant for a full year, and he is winning. His wife, Serita, joined him and now registers 40 pounds lighter on the scales.
Jakes says it was not the fear of death that made him start losing weight; it was the fear of incessant suffering. He had seen his father suffer and waste away for eight years with kidney failure. Jakes looked at his five children and remembered spending his own young years in hospital waiting rooms. He decided he would fight the giant that weighed him down.
In Lay Aside the Weight, Jakes gives readers five "stones" to use if they want to slay the giant: be motivated by the truth of God's plan for you; understand that your actions expedite His plan; be convinced of God's victorious power; act on the knowledge of the truth; trust that your obedience to God will get results. In short, we glorify God with living for Him, not through a premature death that results from poor living habits.
Jakes got the help of nutritionist, Carlo Gabrelian, who monitors the diets and prepares low-fat foods for the Jakes couple. The book includes a large section of "Basic Recipes" created by Gabrelian.
The main message of this book is one Jakes saw on a billboard in an airport -- "Busy People don't have time for the weight," especially if you're busy for the Lord.
