Susan and Michael Card's The Homeschool Journey is a book about learning, loving, and growing together in the Lord. The Cards' philosophy of education and character building are closely intertwined. Understanding the concepts and practice of servanthood, humility, and obedience is just as important to their children as understanding math, spelling, and science. "These important lessons are not easy to learn," Susan writes. "The words must be followed up with action!"
Can you imagine asking one of your children to clean the room of a sibling? Susan Card can not only imagine it, she's done it -- and she expects her children to obey with a servant's heart. As they clean she is close at hand, observing their attitudes and actions. "This simple exercise can take the better part of a morning," she writes, "but it is time well spent."
The Cards give practical advice on finding a homeschooling mentor, becoming involved in your community, finding role models to take your children farther than you ever could alone, and learning together as a family. They explore freeing the God-given creativity in your children while keeping a guard on their innocence, the role of music in education, and understanding the unique learning style of each child.
Throughout the book, the Cards play melody and harmony, Susan describing the daily adventure of watching her four young children grow and learn, Michael adding perspective on making Christ the center of the home. Both share honestly their struggles over finding that two of their children have learning disabilities, and the grace God has given them in meeting the needs of these special little ones. The Homeschool Journey is a window into the heart of one home-schooling family -- a family wholly and joyfully committed to Jesus Christ.
