His new Defeating Darwinism by Opening Minds is written for the non-scientific lay reader. Johnson describes it as "a little course in critical thinking." He's too modest. It may be that, but it is also an interesting, logical presentation of the subtle ways we are diverted in our thinking about the origins of life and matter.
Johnson begins the book by clearly stating his thesis: Is God our true Creator? He traces the contemporary acceptance of Darwinism to the Scopes trial of 1925 and to the play and movie "Inherit the Wind," based on the trial. His analysis of these events and their ongoing influence is worth the price of the book alone.
Johnson thinks the first thing Christians can do in defeating Darwinism is to learn that it is merely the dominant theory, not the bona fide truth. "If Darwinism is the answer, then what is the question?" asks Johnson with a twinkle in his eye. But he is not simply making an argument against Darwinism. He encourages readers to affirm the reality of a continuously creating God. Until all agree that God is Creator, there is no point in discussing the theories of process. "A God who just designs the Universe is not so troubling as a God who creates living beings."
"Christianity has always thrived on adversity," says Johnson. Maybe that's because we have clear thinkers like Johnson to free our minds.
