Teach your child: saints aren't ghosts

Review by Estelle Lamb

Is your child already planning a costume to wear for Halloween? And are you wondering how you'll handle this holiday that traces its roots to pagan practices and beliefs? So many parents struggle with the dark side of Halloween; yet often their concerns only focus their children's attention even more on what they want to avoid.

In Halloween, Are You for Real? Harold Myra has done us all a service with his book about this odd mixture of creepy creatures, costume parties, and harvest festivals. His story depicts three children talking about Halloween and hearing an explanation from their parents. They decide to have a costume party and during the evening Michelle tells her friends about All Hallows Eve.

"It's our time to remember Grandma and Grandpa. They're not really dead. They're alive with Jesus," she concludes.

Before going home, everybody sings "Amazing Grace." Later before bedtime, the three kids talk with their Mother about the reality of the supernatural world, bad dreams and evil spirits. And they memorize 2 Timothy 1:7.

Already a classic, Halloween, Are You for Real? has been revised and updated with all new full-color illustrations by Jane Kurisu.

Longtime author Myra has written more than a dozen books for several publishers. As the father of six children, he has dealt with the questions surrounding Halloween a number of times.

This book is a terrific resource for a full discussion of a troubling holiday without mincing words.
