Most of the children's Bible dictionaries issued in the last few years have been large and fully illustrated, but not too complete in biblical definitions. They resembled a picture book more than a dictionary.
Not so, The Baker Bible Dictionary for Kids. It has "tons and tons of Bible words," but it's still a kid's-sized book -- thick with pages of easy-to-read type, including small, color illustrations on every page. It has the features you'd expect in a good classroom dictionary -- guide words at the top of each page, color-coded tabs to help find the letter of the alphabet, phonetic pronunciations for hard-to-read Bible words, and cross references. Supporting scripture references are in the margins.
This dictionary has a concern for kids' spiritual growth. It uses three different colors to call special attention to three kinds of words: Words about Sin and Salvation (yellow highlighting), Words about God and Jesus (green highlighting), and Words about the Christian Life (pink highlighting). for example, words like Abaddon are shown on a yellow background, Lamb of God on green, and Laying on of hands on pink.
Although these background colors are clear, many of the illustrations are dark and occasionally blurred.
Introducing good basic research practices, The Baker Bible Dictionary for Kids is useful for Sunday school classes and youth groups, camp and Bible school activities, as well as personal use. It is a part of the New Kids Media program from Baker Book House. And if you and your family play Bible crosswords, you'll need one -- or maybe two.
