Changes for Grandparents

Review by Doris Sanford

Grandparents are sometimes accused of being obnoxious with their thick brag books of photos and T-shirts announcing "I'm a grandma" in glow-in-the-dark paint. But Irene Endicott likes being a grandma and boldly states that grandparenting is the second most important job around.

Endicott's book, Grandparenting: It's Not What It Used to Be, is a positive practical book which offers direction for grandparents who know they're indispensable but don't always know what to do. With 15 grandchildren, the author has learned what the rest of us need to hear.

She gives the cardinal rule of grandparenting -- have the best interest of the grandchild at heart as you pray, plan, and partner with the child's parents.

Christian parents who were faithful to God in their parenting have no control over the choices grown children make. Sometimes those choices are painful and grandchildren receive the fallout. A hurting child means that somewhere there is a hurting grandparent. It would be easy for these grandparents to forget that God, the perfect parent, had all of His children rebel.

Endicott writes regularly for Grandparenting Magazine, and addresses a wide range of topics, including babysitting, disciplining grandchildren, divorce, spiritual leadership in the family, addicted teen grandchildren, and custody of grandchildren. The book includes a complete index to find any topic in a flash.

Grandparenting: It's Not What It Used to Be is a unique blend of practical advice and sound Christian principles. It will be enjoyed the first time through and used as a reference again.
