Over the past 23 years John Croyle has raised more than 1300 children -- two his own offspring, the rest kids whose parents couldn't or wouldn't do the job themselves. At his Big Oak Ranches in Alabama, he took in abused, neglected, and problem children headed down the path to destruction. Through daily effort he discovered keys to unlock their potential for success.
In Bringing Out the Winner in Your Child, Croyle shares this practical, nuts-and-bolts advice about parenting. Not the theoretical musings of a child psychologist who has only observed children through two-way mirrors, Croyle's words communicate with the authenticity of a foot soldier who's battled in the trenches. He admits he's made every possible mistake along the way. While acknowledging the rigors of parenting, he reveals some nearly foolproof strategies.
To illustrate his points, Croyle uses anecdotes from his own childhood as well as case histories from Big Oak Ranch. Each of the 15 chapters ends with "The Winner's Focus" -- exercises to help the parent apply the principles in the chapter.
The book is sprinkled with sports anecdotes and analogies. From 1971-73 John Croyle played football for the University of Alabama's legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant. Named second team All-American, Croyle had NFL prospects, but he followed the tug of his heart and the calling of God to rescue unwanted children.
