Closing the Promise Gap

How does a man move from a "Promise Maker" to a "Promise Keeper"? Too many of us immediately think about following a set of rules. That's not what John Trent advocates in The Making of a Godly Man Workbook. Highlighting many key points from his earlier book Go the Distance, this manual helps men take the commitments they have made at a PK conference and develop them into practical, protective guidelines for their lives. The book contains aids for making an individualized spiritual growth plan, milestones to mark progress, exercises and action items for prayer, graphs, and discussion questions to guide progress. One of the most uplifting features is testimonies from Christian men, famous and unknown, about "Living Out" the different promises.

With 20 chapters, The Making of a Godly Man Workbook is designed for seven weeks to six months -- long enough to make a new plan and to live it out or long enough to become a godly man. It can be used with a small group as well as alone. Action Plan Worksheets in the book allow for writing, and Trent encourages men to write as a way to capture how they feel God is directing them. First and foremost, a man who is serious about growing spiritually must "be broken over his sin and weakness and grateful for what Jesus has done in redeeming him." That's the first step toward "closing the gap."

John Trent has been a chief figure and frequent conference speaker with Promise Keepers since the movement began and has helped men coast to coast grow closer to the Lord and to their families. A popular speaker and author, he is both a clear thinker and a good writer.
