Stocking Up for the Long Haul

Review by Jay Graham

At this point most everyone has heard of the Promise Keepers, and a good many men have attended one of the events. The most recent one I've heard about was in Neyland Stadium in Knoxville in early June where 40,000 men gathered to hear Bill McCartney, Tony Evans, and others. But Promise Keepers is not about big events in football stadiums. Regional directors insist their aim is to work themselves out of a job, the sooner the better. They want men to get involved with a local church at home and live out their lives for Christ there.

In Promises and Priorities, H. Norman Wright has written "52 Reminders for Men" to help sustain men in their walk with the Lord after they come home from a conference. Each meditation is followed by a question for reflection, a promise from Scripture, suggestions for priority and action, and a prayer starter.

Wright isn't kidding around or taking it easy on his readers in this little collection. He lays out the needs of men (and in many cases of women as well) in short sentences that call for response. He starts and ends the book with meditations on integrity and truth, which is a main theme for Promise Keepers. He recommends reading the selection for the week every day in the week, and at the end, he suggests "taking the journey a second time."

Wright, a marriage and family therapist, is the author of more than 50 books. Many of the pieces in this collection are drawn from his previous books and articles, but they bear repeating. "Remember, God's promises never change," Wright reminds us.
