Treasure Chest of Insight

Review by Perry C. Cotham

"The Church in America is in a crisis time." Strong words, to be sure. But even stronger coming from George Barna, founder and president of the highly respected Barna Research Group, in his latest book Leaders on Leadership.

After citing a "crisis of faith," "a crisis of spiritual depth," and a "crisis of innovation" because the church "seems afraid to invest in new modes of being the Church," Barna declares that the greatest crisis facing the nation is a "crisis of Christian leadership." Were true leaders leading the Church, Barna contends, the other crises would be opportunities for radical transformation.

Readers convinced of the validity of Barna's thesis may proceed with this new volume on Christian leadership, confident of discovering practical insights and suggestions.

Leaders on Leadership is so unlike other books authored by Barna. This latest entry in the Leading Edge Series steers away from a barrage of statistical data and draws from the wisdom and experience of a veritable all-star team of 15 experienced, highly regarded leaders within the Christian community. All see spiritual leadership as a unique gift.

Readers will discover a style that is personal, warm and informal throughout the work. Often, the contributors risk vulnerability by sharing their personal struggles and temptations.

Barna acknowledges in his preface that "neither I nor the contributing authors believe that only one gender can lead people," but does not explain the total absence of any female contributor. This was the only disappointment in an interesting volume filled with inspiration and guidance on a vital subject.
