Super series entertains girls all summer long

Review by Jeannie Crawford Lee

Girls are playing more sports these days, and Linda Lee Maifair's new series Winners proves that sports build character as well as fitness. Written for ages 7-10, each of the four books deals with a different sport and has a different cast of characters.

Batter Up, Bailey Benson! is about a close friendship between Bailey and Nikki, both topnotch fifth-grade softball players. But when they are assigned to different teams and must play against each other, it leads to anger and hurt and questions about what friendship means.

Go Figure, Gabriella Grant! involves Gabriella's dream of making it to the Olympics as a figure skater. Only it requires lots of practice, and she begins to think of quitting until her coach reminds her of good reasons to do her best.

In Whoa There, Wanda Wilson! Wanda is a member of the Apple Valley Riding Club, when newcomer Cheree Davenport arrives. Cheree rides Western style and does have some funny ways of talking. When the club president wants to bar her from membership, Wanda takes a stand.

Use Your Head, Molly Malone! is a case of sibling rivalry on a soccer team. Molly Malone has convinced her sister Sarah to join the team, only to find that Sarah gets to play forward while Molly has to play fullback. It's not fair! thinks Sarah. But soccer calls for teamwork and sooner or later every team member gets recognized.
