Super series entertains girls all summer long

Review by Jeannie Crawford Lee

Young readers a bit more advanced will enjoy virtual globe trotting in Stacy Towle Morgan's Ruby Slipper School Series. Also designed for readers ages 7 to 10, this series offers overall longer books, more challenging vocabulary, and more introspection along with the action.

Eight-year-old Hope Brown and her little sister, Annie, embark on a series of adventures in countries around the world. Their father travels often in his business, and because the girls are home-schooled by their mother, they enjoy a global schoolroom. In Books 1-4, the sisters have already been to England, Egypt, Belgium, and the Caribbean. Two new titles build on the touchstone themes of learning by doing and living out your Christian faith in everyday life, wherever you are.

In New Zealand Shake-Up, Hope and Annie take up residence on a New Zealand sheep farm. New foods, such as vegemite sandwiches, new expressions -- gumboots, cuppa, lolly -- plus the activities of the farm, especially at lambing time, absorb their attention until an earthquake happens. At the same time, a new friend is threatened because of his race and his devout Christian ways. The girls discover the deeper resources of prayer and the strength of a steady faith.

Hope is worried about the family's Journey to Japan, and she is not any happier when she gets there. She looks so different from everyone! Then, she is embarrassed in a restaurant when she upsets their dinner host by touching chopsticks with her sister. She didn't know what that meant to the Japanese!

Visiting a Japanese school and an overnight stay with sisters Midori and Yoko provide opportunities for fun and learning, but something is odd about Yoko. Hope and Annie try to figure out where she goes at night and why her father is upset with her. The answer brings them new insight about making the choice to be a Christian.
