The Southern flavor is unmistakable in The Adventures of Callie Ann, a new series for readers 7-to-10 by Shannon Mason Leppard. Not surprisingly, the author (daughter-in-law of Lois Leppard who pens the beloved Mandy Series), grew up in a small town in South Carolina and now lives in North Carolina. Her lead character, Callie Ann, is an energetic nine-year-old, curious, excitable, determined, and with a headful of curly, red hair.
In the first book, Summer Surprise, we meet Callie Ann at a fateful moment -- her family has just moved to a new, small town. It's hard to adjust, and Callie Ann relies on talks with Miss Kitty to keep her spirits up. A new friend, Jason, helps a lot -- even if he is a boy! Book 2 picks up right where the first leaves off. The Ballet Class Mystery finds Callie Ann starting ballet lessons. The mystery is another boy, one who dances away from other students. Callie Ann is determined to find out who he is. There's a surprise in store for her, and she discovers something about judging people.
