As Christians lead the way in pointing attention to the needs of young teens in our culture, Levy targets that group with his high energy sound and unminced words. wrestling angels was released in March and the opening cut, "If You Want to Lead Me to Jesus," is getting regular play on radio stations across the country. The song, written by Levy, Jeff Borders, and Kyle Matthews, is directed to Christians and has a message that may be hard for some to take:
Levy hits the big 3-0 this year. He has a more confident -- some might even say more aggressive -- sound as well as a more adult look. He also shows signs of maturity that are grounded in the Lord so he can write in the fifth cut of the album, "grace my life," that "LORD, your nearness is my good."
Levy grew up in Nashville where he taught as a high school teacher and basketball coach and helped lead worship at his church. But it's hard to live in Nashville and not know somebody in the music industry. In Levy's case, it was Jeff Borders, a friend's husband, and the two started to work together on songs.
After doing two demo tapes, Levy thought of himself as a singer, and was surprised when he wound up helping write most of the ten songs on his first self-named album. That disc, was described as "somewhere left of The Beatles and right of alternative rock," but the praise and notice it earned have led to writing more songs and now to wrestling angels.
The title may recall the patriarch Jacob's bout with an angel. Levy hopes it will. He sings with the same determination to get to the truth of things that Jacob had.
