Dollar sense for single parents

Larry Burkett's name is familiar to nearly all of us as a wise and caring Christian financial counselor. What we may not know about him is his personal zeal to help single parents.

"I've always been dismayed that so few churches do anything on a consistent basis to help meet the single parents' needs," he writes in The Financial Guide for the Single Parent. His organization, Christian Financial Concepts, has a single parent department, and he is well aware of the financial plight of single mothers, many with children to raise, and of single fathers, who often have their visitation rights denied.

Burkett carefully describes the different situations that lead to being a single parent -- divorce, having a child outside marriage, having a spouse die -- giving many examples of each. Then he leads readers through basic financial issues all will have to face like finding a job, paying for housing, car expenses, child expenses, alimony, and court battles.

In the last chapter he gives specifics for making a realistic budget. The most valuable part of the book may be in the back where he gives worksheets for such things as insurance, car payments, federal estate taxes, wills and trusts, and a checklist of documents.

This is not a quick and easy book to digest (It is a revised and expanded edition of an earlier book on the same subject). Burkett is always careful and thorough. However, he does have a heart for helping single parents, and there's plenty of help here at a very reasonable price. The Financial Guide for the Single Parent would make an excellent source for churches to use "on a consistent basis to help meet the single parents' needs."
