Shortly before Martha Grimes' first baby is born, she receives word that her soldier husband is missing in action and presumed dead. Only 18 years old, with no family to help her, Martha decides she must give up her precious daughter for adoption. But months later, Sergeant Harry Grimes does return, and discovers his longed-for first child is gone forever. Though he and Martha have another child -- a son they name Joel -- their marriage never recovers from their loss. Joel grows up in a home where affection is rare. He tries not to offend his father, who explodes with anger at the slightest provocation. Will Joel ever experience the love he craves?
Meanwhile, Katie Grimes grows up as Kyle Rothmore, the only child of the prosperous head of Rothmore Insurance. Her home is a mansion, the servants her closest friends. Not until her adoptive father dies does she learn that she is not a Rothmore by birth; she is adopted.
Kyle is crushed by the revelation. Who is she? Who were her parents? Does she have any hope of finding them? Who will be her help in this time of trouble?
Oke and Bunn have woven a many-sided plot in this story that spans a generation. As in their earlier collaboration, Return to Harmony, they explore what time does to family relationships -- and give us good reading in the bargain.
