Undertake the Joyful Journey

Guess who used the word joy most among New Testament writers. That's right, it was that crusty Apostle Paul. Some 22 times, according to the new expanded Ryrie Study Bible, he mentioned joy. Blinded at his conversion, imprisoned, shipwrecked, whatever happened -- he seemed almost overcome by the thought of the joyful presence of Christ.

This same sense of underlying joy in the Christian life fills the pages of Joy for the Journey. A special collection of joyful promises and wisdom from the writings of well-known Christian women, it raises our awareness of the joy to be realized in this life, no matter what we face.

Each excerpt has three brief relevant Scripture passages to accompany it, and the selections make excellent devotions either for private reading or group sharing. Divided into eight parts, each part includes a dozen or so excerpts from women writers such as Anne Ortlund, Gloria Gaither, Joni Eareckson Tada, Elizabeth Elliott, Luci Swindoll, and Barbara Johnson. Although the women seem to have different perspectives and personalities (Ortlund writes more like a pastor, Swindoll like a take-charge motivator, and Johnson like a devout humorist), all give evidence of a sincere walk with the Lord and all have known the joy they write about.

As Swindoll says in this excerpt from You Bring the Confetti: "To experience happiness we must train ourselves to live in this moment, to savor it for what it is. . . .Those special savored moments of fun, reflection, happiness, and pleasure give us a tiny taste of what eternity with Christ will one day be like."

That must be the way Paul looked at it.
