Their book Staying in Tune: A Sane Response to Your Child's Music doesn't have information about all the nasty rock groups so you can beat your child over the head with it. (Menconi has tried the record-burning routine, and he knows it backfires!) Its goal is "to help you effectively communicate biblical values using today's music as a window into your child's life." And the first steps may be recalling your own teen days, your commitment to Christ, and an evaluation of your current musical diet.
Originally issued in 1990, Staying in Tune has been thoroughly updated. One of the most informative chapters documents what many of us already suspected -- secular music is getting "darker, deadlier, and going deeper underground," as seen in rap, grunge, and the alternative scene.
The book ends with a chapter that ought to be required reading for every parent of a teen -- "Cultivating a Taste for Christian Music in Your Child." Menconi lays it out in simple, digestible, and loving steps, beginning with "Start on your Knees." He goes on to things like "attend Christian concerts as a family." Menconi makes a strong case for a 30-day Christian music diet rather than doing away with music altogether.
Just for the record, Menconi has two teenagers himself!
