Best may be yet to come

What about these divorce statistics? Are they going up or down? That depends on the age bracket; the surprising and alarming thing is that long-term marriages are breaking up in record numbers. Although divorce in the U.S. generally declined from 1981 to 1991, divorce among couples married thirty years or more showed a sharp increase.

David and Claudia Arp, directors of Marriage Alive International, have written The Second Half of Marriage to help couples who suddenly realize "their teenagers will soon leave the nest, they've been invited to their twenty-fifth high school reunion, and they've just received an invitation to join the AARP." Married for 30 years themselves, the Arps write from their own personal experience as well as that of couples they have counseled and met in workshops across the U.S. and in Europe. For this book, they conducted a large survey of couples in long-term marriages.

Their counsel is right on! In the eight challenges they present, they start by telling couples they must "let go of past disappointments, forgive each other and commit to making the rest of marriage the best." All the challenges focus on the married partner and the relationship -- not the children; not the aging parents; not the outside activities -- as the most important thing. The Arps cover all the bases, from how to handle anger to restoring good sex.

The Arps also provide evaluations, charts, and "Marriage Builder" questions at the end of each chapter that readers have come to appreciate from their previous books. The Second Half of Marriage is also available on audio cassettes. That's a lot of good counsel to help couples have marriages that will last a lifetime.
