The My Bible Pals series is getting to be quite a collection with a big storybook, shaped board books about different Bible characters, sticker books, spinner games, and coloring books. No matter the kind of book or activity, Standard Publishing presents basic information about biblical characters to young children ages 2 to 8.
The latest addition to the series is My Bible Pals: Things to Know. Written by Clare Mishica, this book is for preschoolers. On each spread is a scene from a New Testament story (most involve Jesus) with child-appropriate characters. Large headings at the top indicate the main topic of the spread and the story. For example, TRAVEL is the topic in a story and scene about Mary and Joseph coming to Bethlehem.
At the bottom of each brief story are two questions to involve a little one more with the story. These are usually simple counting and naming exercises. The learning hook in this book is a hideaway mouse pictured in an almost-hidden spot in each illustration.
The final spread entitled "Things Every Bible Pal Should Know" pictures six scenes of modern-day children. Each scene has a paraphrase of a Bible reference underneath. Jodi McCallum's appealing illustrations will be familiar to anyone with other books from the series.
This is a good storytime book to share with a young child whose attention span is not too long.
