On a recent Sunday afternoon, our family (a couple with two school-age children) was looking for something to do together. It was snowing, and we did not want to go to the mall! Our nine-year-old suddenly suggested that we could read from the book she had just gotten at the church library: Hero Tales by Dave & Neta Jackson.
Well, when your child suggests reading together, you don't want to throw water on the idea. She brought out the book and we discovered it had stories about 15 key Christian heroes. There is a short biography and three episodes about each one pointing to a great character quality the hero exhibited.
It includes stories about characters most of us know -- Dwight L. Moody, John Wesley, Amy Carmichael, Martin Luther, to name a few, but it also includes some we didn't know too well -- Mary Slessor (pioneer missionary to Calabar), George Muller (the man who started Christian orphanages in England), and Samuel Morris (African evangelist to the United States).
We read the story of David Livingstone's expedition to find where the Nile River started. His story illustrates dedication: "totally committing your life to a God-given task or goal." All stories are followed by a Scripture verse and three questions.
The Jacksons, known for their bestselling Trailblazer Books, have done a lot of research to write these stories, and they tell them well with lots of conversation that keeps kids interested. The book is aimed at ages 612. It has full-page illustrations of each character.
We had a good Sunday afternoon. We'll have more getting to know the great Christians in Hero Tales.
