See, Judge, and Act --
Matthew's message

Review by Irene J. Kenigson Justo González lights the way for Spanish-speaking Bible students through the Gospel of Matthew with his new book. Three Months in the School of Matthew is an incisive, challenging study. He utilizes the "See, Judge, Act" methodology (awareness, study, and action) to draw us deeply into these dramatic events, not merely as spiritual history but as an urgent call to action right now.

This book, written in Spanish, is one of a five-volume set of daily study guides which can be used in just about any Bible study setting over a 13-week period. The language is alive and exciting, the message clear and concise. Each daily reading presents an opportunity to honestly face the facts (see), judge (according to the Scriptures), and to vigorously examine our own behavior so that we are moved to act in accordance with Christ's doctrine. Known to readers for his books about the importance of Christianity in the Hispanic world, González turns Matthew's gospel into a journey of discovery. His erudite commentaries point out and clarify for us, with directness and pertinent examples, seemingly contradictory or often misunderstood meanings in both the Old and New Testaments. His incisive correlation of the events and history of those turbulent times with our own is a powerful teaching tool.

From the first verses in Matthew stating Jesus' genealogy to Jesus' final statement of mission, this study draws attention to details which are sometimes hidden and at times lost through rote and familiarity, but which are integral to deeper understanding of Christ's message.

The questions at the end of each segment are not easy ones. They require that we fearlessly probe our deepest selves for answers. González provokes a feeling almost of anxiety and a sense of the urgent need for immediate action with these pointed questions. As he says: "The purpose of this study is not only to help us understand Christ's ministry, but our own." This book is an excellent guide for those who prefer a Spanish Bible study.
