Pages of Joyful Feasting
in Artistic Collaboration

Review by Raynell Smithson

Two inspiring artists combine their talents to make Joy in the Journey a feast for the ear and the eye. Michael Card, renowned singer-songwriter, can create an ear-full feast even without the sounds of instruments. Timothy Botts has inspired us visually over the years with arresting calligraphy of scripture quotations. Now these two combine their gifts in a heart-stoppingly beautiful book, appropriate for giving at the Christmas season and inspiring at any time.

Card, in addition to his musical talents, is also a Bible scholar. Known best as the composer of Gospel Music Association's 1983 Song of the Year, "El Shaddai," he is also the creator of Poiema, The Life, and The Ancient Faith. In Joy in the Journey, he comments on the particular situation that inspired the lyrics of each song or gives a biblical truth that had impressed him when he wrote the song -- the look of pure joy on his young daughter's face when she took her first steps (Joy in the Journey), the heart cry of people of the Lord in prayer for His return (Maranatha). He's as good a preacher as he is songwriter!

More intricate than most of his previous calligraphy, Botts's creations present his interpretation of either a verse or the chorus from the song which is printed in full on the facing page. He uses a great variety of type styles, sometimes layered, sometimes with suggestions of other elements like a fishnet, a rocking chair, an ear, an umbrella. A few of the calligraphy pieces seem overwrought with too much type, and it's only after you have looked for a time that you realize how much more there is to see. Botts has taught calligraphy workshops internationally as well as created books of his own.

Ideal for a long evening of reading, Joy in the Journey will mean even more if you happen to be playing Michael Card's music as you read his words and see them depicted in artistic form.
