REFLECTIONS on the WORD

An excerpt from

Jesus, Be in My Christmas
by Sarah Hornsby

Sarah Hornsby has served with her husband as a Young Life missionary in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, for more than 13 years. In addition to helping build a Young Life camp, teaching women, and writing a newsletter about their good work, she has also written nine books, many illustrated in Hispanic style. The excerpt below is from her most recent written for use during Advent and reflects her total dependence upon the Lord.

The Scriptures are filled with rejoicing as a result of the good news of God's love for us in Jesus. The heavens and earth rejoice. Little hills, fields, mountains, trees, as well as the saints, the seekers of the living God, rejoice. I rejoice with my heart, soul, spirit, tongue, lips. The virgin rejoices in the dance. The bereaved rejoice from the depths of their sorrow. Workers rejoice in the labor of their hands. Elderly rejoice in years lived. Youth rejoice in their vitality. Parents rejoice when their children know God. A husband rejoices in the wife of his youth. Sower and reaper rejoice together. Those persecuted for their faith rejoice in being counted worthy to suffer.

Believers in Jesus rejoice in hope of glory, in God's mercy, salvation, God's Word and promises, in the Truth, in our names written in the Book of Life. We rejoice when one part is honored. We rejoice with the angels when one lost lamb is found. Thank You for Your joy unspeakable and full of glory. Jesus, be in my rejoicing.

". . . Even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy."
