Michael Garland has illustrated the story well, in a style with strong vitality and color. It's the kind of story that is labeled a "children's story" but will be enjoyed by young and old alike as the Christmas season approaches.
Alabaster's Song has an accompanying animated video by the same title which expands the story to include more detail. The video opens with a family scene from 1960 and expands the story before moving to the present. As a grown father, he wakes his son and reawakens his own devotion while they listen to Alabaster's Song.
Max Lucado's previous books for children are The Crippled Lamb and Just in Case You Ever Wonder. This story may not have enough content for a video, but it communicates God's unchanging love clearly.
