Artist Finds Beauty in Simplicity

Review by Cindy Solomon

People who have seen artist Thomas Kinkade's paintings know they are in for a real treat when they open a book containing 31 of his prints. But the beauty of his impressionistic art is only half the treat as he adds words of wisdom, warmth, and wonder in a lovely new gift book titled Simpler Times.

Each chapter is, in itself, a retreat far from the complexities and cares of this world. If your typical day is one of rushing from one priority to another, then you must make time to savor both the art and writing in this book.

Kinkade's main message in Simpler Times is that people today are yearning for a life that focuses on what is truly important and beautiful-one that is simple and uncluttered. Kinkade himself demonstrates this yearning through his paintings and his words as he explores the ideals of a simpler life: choosing simplicity in a complex age, the fine art of keeping perspective, the simplifying lessons of nature. In each chapter, he blends personal stories with profound statements that help you rethink your own life's pursuits and goals.

For example, when Kinkade writes about his marriage and family, he shares part of his daily routine including his 30-second commute from the house to his art studio and spending time at the end of the school day listening to his daughters share news about their days. You catch a glimpse of such simple pleasures, you begin to realize that it did not happen by accident. The Kinkade family made the conscious decision to simplify their lives by avoiding time-consuming activities such as surfing the net and watching TV (they may be one of the last families left who do not own a TV!).

Not only does the Kinkade family say no to the messages of our culture, but they also have learned to say no to many other commitments that steal family time. One of Kinkade's notable quotes related to his decision is "What a surge of energy when we realize that saying no is really a way of saying yes to all we really care about."

In today's ever-increasing rush of activities and new technologies, it is nice to be reminded that in simplicity there is peace, happiness, and beauty. Simpler Times is a journey you should take soon and take often. And don't go alone. Share the book and the journey as a gift to your spouse, family, and friends. You'll be glad you did.
