Set Apart in Love

Lori Wick is one of those authors whose tender love stories satisfy greatly yet avoid cloying sweet romanticism. With 14 novels published, Wick is gaining quite a following-the first book in her new Rocky Mountain Memories Series quickly became a # 1 bestseller for Christian readers.

Her many fans will also be delighted with the second book, Whispers of Moonlight. The story is set in the Colorado Territory after the Civil War. Rebecca Wagner comes out from Philadelphia to visit her father whom she has not seen since she was a child before he came West to be a rancher. The ranch foreman, young Travis Buchanan, is immediately smitten by Rebecca. It appears the feeling is mutual when Travis must leave to check on the former ranch foreman.

But Travis is arrested for murder in Denver. When he returns, somewhat embittered, he finds another cowhand interested in Rebecca. Soon her father dies-but not before he sees Rebecca and Travis marry.

This is just the beginning of an absorbing story that follows Travis and Rebecca through years of separation, of children born to Rebecca, of a reunion that is rocky, and of Travis's finding a deep faith to sustain him. He and Rebecca love each other very much, but she is not restored to full faith in Christ when the story ends in 1877.

More saga than romance, Whispers of Moonlight is encouraging to read in this time of troubled marriages. Wick writes simply, letting conversation carry the story-conversation and conviction about the really important things in life. Readers know the truth of the scripture verse that comes to Travis's mind: He who hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.
