"Lighten up, church," is Sweet's anthem. He has seen too many "stiff-backed, sober-faced, straightlaced, hard-boiled, boneheaded believers." Throughout the ten chapters of The Jesus Prescription, Sweet says things Christians really need to hear, always mixed with the elixir of lightheartedness.
This bit of counsel runs counter to nearly all advice of the last ten years when we had a constant barrage of advice about making plans. Somewhere along the way, we forgot who is really in charge in this life. Sweet quotes John Chancellor as a reminder: "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans."
Sweet offers clear biblical basis as he details the ways and habits of Jesus' disciplined life during his ministry among us. In the chapter on walking and exercise, Sweet reminds us that Jesus walked everywhere, he even walked on water!
You'll want to read The Jesus Prescription for a Healthy Life several times, once to laugh and once just to enjoy the many sayings and poster pages throughout the book.
Jan Derowitsch is a mom who wants to laugh more from Kingsville, TX.
