Focus on Women and the Word

Bibles published specifically for women at once make clear that women's needs and viewpoints in studying Scripture are different from those of men.

The new Study Bible for Women: The New Testament not only provides special help for understanding Scripture, but all its notes and articles have been written by women with special consideration for women's interests and concerns. The list of over 50 qualified contributors represents women from all walks of life in the English-speaking world. They also come from a wide range of denominational and vocational backgrounds. Nonetheless, they agree in their high view of Scripture as the inspired Word of God, their approach to inclusive language, and their principles of translation.

The three women editors of this new Bible are in no way suggesting that study Bibles edited by men are "anti-women"; they simply miss certain aspects of New Testament teaching because "the female perspective has not occurred to them."

Commentary and Study Notes in this New Revised Standard Version are on the same page as the text to which they apply. The Notes, set in the text, are contemporary and interesting such as the one about the role of Africans in the New Testament (Acts 13:1), Jesus' use of childbirth as an illustration of pain for a productive end (John 16:21), and dealing with sexual harassment (Eph. 5:3). Of special interest are the articles at the back on Jesus Christ, Men and Women in Relationship, and The Occupations of Women.

This Bible is a good choice for women who may be wrestling with the suggested conflict between the role of women in Scripture and their role in today's culture. Both the NRSV translation and the study helps seek to help women grow spiritually as they feed on God's Word.
