Oswald Chambers, born in Aberdeen, Scotland, was converted as a teenager after hearing the great Baptist preacher, Charles Hadden Spurgeon. Chambers studied at London's Royal College of Art and the University of Edinburgh before answering the call of God to the Christian ministry.
Following theological training at Dunoon College, he conducted a Bible-teaching ministry in the UK, the U.S., and Japan. In 1910 Chambers married Gertrude Hobbs. They had one daughter, Kathleen, who now resides in London.
From 1911 to 1915 he served as principle of the Bible Training Center in London. During World War I Chambers and his family lived in Zeitoun, Egypt (near Cairo), where he ministered to the British Commonwealth troops as a YMCA chaplain. He died in Cairo on November 15, 1917, at the age of 43.
Oswald Chambers' published works were compiled by Mrs. Chambers, a former court stenographer, from her verbatim shorthand notes of his lectures. For half a century following her husband's death she labored to give his words to the world. More than thirty titles bear his name.
My Utmost for His Highest, his best-known book, has been continuously in print since 1927 and remains one of the top ten religious bestsellers. It has become a Christian classic.
