Reading Gary L. Bauer's Our Hopes, Our Dreams is a good place to start. A recent Los Angeles Times poll of 1,400 citizens indicates that Americans across the board are seeking a revival of traditional and moral standards. Bauer, who doesn't label himself as right-wing or left, seeks to revive these moral standards, especially in regard to the family.
Bauer is no Johnny-come-lately to the field of government policy on family and education matters. He first entered government service in 1982 as a deputy undersecretary in the Department of Education. In June 1986, he was named chairman of President Reagan's Special Working Group on the Family, and in 1988 he joined the Family Research Council where he directs pro-family policy and lobbying groups.
With this background, he has become a notable figure on such issues as the priority of the family, the worth of human life, re-invigorating American education, pornography, and the tax structure. Here he writes in plain language to support his positions.
Bauer presents a ten-point "Compact with our Fellow Americans" with the heading "We mutually pledge to each other . . ." An additional provision is given for public officials. He asks readers to sign the form on the last page of the book, tear it out, and send it in for tabulation. Focus on the Family has published Our Hopes, Our Dreams in paperback format for wider distribution.
On every subject, Bauer makes clear that the revolution in America must begin in the home, the very place where hopes and dreams come to life--and where we are registered to vote.
