A Guide for Walk of Faith

Review by James Cutler

While watching Charles Stanley on his weekly television program In Touch, I noticed several members of the choir had their heads down. At first I thought they might be in prayer as Stanley preached, but then one of them lifted her pencil and I knew she had been writing and studying. Listening to Stanley gives you cause to write things down.

Now his encyclopedic knowledge of the Christian life has been brought together in The Glorious Journey. A compilation of scriptural principles that Stanley has learned and applied in more than thirty years as a pastor, the book is divided into eight major categories: Church concerns, Daily living, Doctrine, End Times, Personal Growth, Relationships, Service and Outreach, and Spiritual Disciplines.

Each of these sections has numerous topics, all boldly set off with headings at the top of the page. A topic is usually organized with a scripture verse, commentary, and application. The wide margins on each page offer space for readers to jot down their own thoughts and queries. This space also holds quotes that are instructive in themselves. For instance, under the topic Grace is a quote from Baptist missionary Amy Carmichael: "Thank God. He does not measure grace out in teaspoons."

Stanley, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Atlanta and twice elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention, has not measured his words in teaspoons either. This broad-scale reference on Christian living is designed for many sips as you make your walk of faith.
