With these goals in mind, Robert and Jeanette Lauer have written weekly devotions around 12 marriage-improving themes, one for each four-week period with special devotions for birthdays, anniversary, and Christmas to make 52 in all. The Lauers suggest you read these together as a couple and then discuss how they apply to your marriage. Each devotion closes with a prayer and a section called Act with things to do and contemplate during the coming week-or longer if needed. The Lauers also recommend that each spouse keep a journal to record their responses and for periodic review.
Although gentle in tone, the Lauers don't mess around on these topics. They offer guidance for fighting constructively, managing money, establishing roles, etc. all the areas that can cause marital conflict. They also realize that most couples live very hectic lives, and offer two suggestions derived from their research and counseling of couples at all stages of their relationship: people make time for the things they consider important, and, if you have children, one of the best gifts you can give them is your own happy and healthy marriage.
Writing a book designed for a year-long journey indicates the Lauers' belief that time is required if significant changes are to be made. It also bears testimony to their belief that mutual commitment to each other and to Christ gives couples time to grow.
