Review by Mike and Amy Nappa

"Mayday, mayday! This is an emergency! Can anyone hear me?" These were the cries of 15-year-old David James, a Canadian on a hiking expedition with his grandfather. When the older man slipped and fell over the edge of a cliff, it was up to David to administer first aid and find help.

Kids can learn the outcome to David's adventure, and read other exciting stories in Real Kids, Real Adventures Books #5 and #6. These two titles continue the series of true stories by Deborah Morris that focus on middle schoolers and high schoolers who've had a wide variety of dangerous experiences. Each book contains three stories, as well as pictures of the brave kids involved.

Besides the perilous situation of David James, Real Kids, Real Adventures #5 tells of 11-year-old Raymond Lauriano, kidnapped from his California home and taken on a cross-country journey. And readers will be swept away with John Collmer, 13, and his dog as they're dragged through a storm sewer after heavy flooding.

Real Kids, Real Adventures #6 tells the dangers Adam DeSutter and Tim Boe, both 11, face when a tornado hits their town. Then John Ruiz, 13, must save his father from being drowned in a raging river. And when a bear attacks, Boy Scout Jason Francois must come to the rescue of a younger boy.

Girls may be disappointed that no stories depict female heroes, but the adventures are so exciting they'll enjoy them anyway. Author Deborah Morris is a wonderful storyteller, including conversations and events surrounding the actual adventure to let the reader get to know the kids involved. The stories have very light scriptural content, mostly in the form of pleas for help during the crisis, but readers will clearly see God's hand in the amazing situations described.
