Whittling, gardening and cooking are part of everyday life for nine-year-old Teigan. Her story gives a different perspective on learning in I Am a Home Schooler, by Julie Voetberg. Taasha Owen's hand-tinted photographs and the rural setting of Teigan's home give the book an old-fashioned, unpretentious feeling.

Teigan and her younger sisters live with their parents on a farm in Washington state, and do all their schooling at home. She explains what it means to be a home schooler and walks readers through a typical day and week at her home. Teigan studies art, piano, spelling and penmanship, and also helps with chores at home. Learning continues on field trips and at gatherings with other home-schooled children. Although she occasionally wonders what it's like to go to a traditional school, Teigan gives many reasons why she likes learning at home.

Children who study at home will enjoy a book about kids like themselves. I Am a Home Schooler can also be helpful for families considering home schooling and for letting children from traditional schools know what their home-schooled friends are doing all day.
