Being You Is Real

Review by Betsy Jenkins Ellis

Played any charades lately? Christopher Castile has been playing this game of pretending to be someone else since he was three (he's 15 now). In fact you probably know him best from his roles in the television sit com Step by Step and the movies Beethoven and Beethoven's 2nd. He's a bona fide star.

But he's also really in touch with himself and his family, and he shares lots of interesting things from his life with readers in Being You Is Definitely Cool. This native of Southern California sounds just like the kid next door as he tells us about being embarrassed on a TV show, making a hook landing on an aircraft carrier, that he loves playing golf and messing around with his computer, that his favorite subjects are math and science. He's honest about girls, homework, and what it's like to be famous.

Speaking directly to teen readers, Chris switches easily from stories about being on TV talk shows like Good Morning, America, Inside America, and The Suzanne Sommers Show to stories about his mom, dad, and sister. He credits his family, especially his mom, for keeping his life so normal--making him take out the trash and do other routine chores on a regular basis. She's also on the set with him all the time. It's interesting that Chris spends as much time telling other teens about the things he does with his family as he does telling them about the roles he has played.

He credits getting a lot out of life with putting a lot into life. "It all comes back to my faith in God, because that can never be taken from me." There's no way you'd think he's a nerd or a stuck-up actor after reading Being You Is Definitely Cool, but you sure do like him.

Betsy Jenkins Ellis is a teenage reviewer and fan of Chris Castile.
