Every child in a family has it tough at one time or another! From being overweight to having a chronically ill parent to being robbed, the problems for children in today's families threaten to overwhelm them-and us. It may not be enough to read the Bible and pray for solutions, especially if we don't know a lot about the problem.
In Helping Kids Through Tough Times, author Doris Sanford has provided help in 50 problem areas. Well-known from previous books for her combination of empathy, common-sense, and strong faith, Sanford brings much experience and training to this book. She has served as a psychiatric nursing instructor, a social services consultant, and a college teacher in the social sciences. She is an expert in problems relating to abused children.
But Sanford is writing for those of us who are in the trenches with children every day-parents, teachers, group leaders, neighbors and friends to children. Each problem is introduced with two pages about the child's difficulty, what we can do to help, and how to point the child to God.
The next two pages on each topic are for the child. They help answer questions about the situations from the child's point of view, and they encourage self-reliance and build trust in God to be present with the child in all situations.
All pages are perforated and can be pulled out and duplicated for use with individuals or groups as needed ("Help sheets" for helping kids). Gracie Evans' black-and-white illustrations add a starkness to the feelings generated by the content.
Helping Kids Through Tough Times offers no sweet, simplistic approach to any problem. It does offer strength and many opportunities to heal the hearts of children.
